Weaving Project With Periscope Woodcraft

May 10, 2022 By Melinda

One of the most delightful experiences for me is being able to collaborate with other artists whom I admire. I had this fun opportunity last year with the team at Periscope Woodcraft:  Tony Dattilo • Brad Simpson • Jonah Anderson. Any project this team is involved in will be non-standard and quite amazing. Contact them at Periscope

Beautiful timber-frame garage built by Periscope Woodcraft needs some railings.

Periscope uses my specs to build a craftsman framework for me to weave into.

Periscope Woodcraft mills the Fir splints for me to weave with.

I’ve got a jig made to hold the frame as I weave into it.

The client requests a contrasting color band and I happen to have some Red Osier Dogwood and Willow that has aged to a dark brown to use for the bands at the bottom and top.

Ready for the top piece. This design worked so well for me, and I’m sure the Periscope Team will take it and improve it with every new panel they make.

Fence panel ready for installation!

It looks so great!

What fun to work with this team of visionary artists-craftsmen. Thank you for including me!

About Melinda

Forty years ago, while sitting on the beach playing with my young children, I made my first basket out of a pile of willow trimmings someone had tossed there. It looked wildly made like a crazy bird’s nest. While being together with my two sons on a beautiful Pacific Northwest shoreline, this simple experience of crafting with the natural materials at hand kindled a passion for creating forms using plant fibers. I thank my family, my community, and all my teachers for cultivating this gift in me.
