(2019) Northwest Plant Fiber Artist, Melinda West, of Indianola Washington, has been practicing the art of plant fiber weaving since 1985. She has studied with many native and non-native weavers and artists, the foremost being Ed Carriere of the Suquamish Tribe. Her inspiration comes from nature and from the First Peoples of the Pacific Northwest, whose cultures embrace the rich traditions of natural fiber use, knowledge in the land, and artistic skills development in all aspects of life. For over three decades she has been sharing her love of natural history, environmental stewardship, and appreciation of cultural, and learning-style, diversity. Melinda has taught art/culture/environmental education workshops at the Seattle Art Museum, IslandWood, Olympic College, Coupeville Art Center, North Cascades Institute, and Olympic Park Institute. She also has given programs for weavers guilds, garden clubs, archaeology and ethnobiology societies, and has taught in public and private schools throughout the region. Melinda’s award-winning art is on display in public and private collections. Images of her work and articles she has authored are published in books, magazines, and online journals.
