Gifts From The Landscape
Weave a Ribbed Gathering Basket With Melinda West

https://islandwood.org/event/gifts-landscape-weaving-ribbed-gathering-basket

Sunday, Feb 4th, 9:00-4:00, 2018
At IslandWood

Join Melinda West for a day in the Art Studio at IslandWood and learn to transform plant materials from the Pacific Northwest Landscape into a beautiful Ribbed Gathering Basket.  This is one of Melinda’s favorite baskets to make.  The larger sizes are essential for her use harvesting vegetables and fruits in the garden because of the strength of the framework.  Made in medium and smaller sizes, this style of basket is useful as a gift, or in the home as a decorative container featuring the colors and textures of the Pacific Northwest.  Students will learn the basics of traditional ribbed basketry construction using the renewable resources of pruned tree and shrub branches to form the framework.  For the weaving materials, students will learn to utilize a assortment of Northwest barks, grasses, leaves and vines.  The excellent IslandWood Chefs will provide us with a memorable gourmet lunch in the beautiful Dining Hall across the meadow from the Art Studio.  Class size is limited, and all materials and lunch are included in the cost.

About Melinda

Forty years ago, while sitting on the beach playing with my young children, I made my first basket out of a pile of willow trimmings someone had tossed there. It looked wildly made like a crazy bird’s nest. While being together with my two sons on a beautiful Pacific Northwest shoreline, this simple experience of crafting with the natural materials at hand kindled a passion for creating forms using plant fibers. I thank my family, my community, and all my teachers for cultivating this gift in me.
